Description
This is a stunning moriage porcelain lidded bowl. Moriage is a special type of raised decoration used on some Japanese pottery. Sometimes pieces of clay were shaped by hand and applied to the item; sometimes the clay was squeezed from a tube in the way we apply cake frosting. One type of moriage is called Dragonware by collectors. Nippon porcelain was made in Japan from 1891 to 1921. Nippon is the Japanese word for "Japan." Nippon porcelain was made to be exported to the west, with designs specifically for American tastes. This bowl is 3 1/2” tall and 7” in diameter. With the handles it is 9” wide. The gold is so delicately applied with the moriage and the scene is beautiful. The moriage texture paint is intact and brings out the delicacy of the detail in the design. It is very rare to be able to get the lid with the bowl for a piece of this age. The mark is starting to fade but reads Hand Painted Nippon. No cracks, crazing or chips. The bowl is absolutely beautiful.
