Description
Maker: This elegant coupe soup bowl is by the renowned Japanese maker Moriumura Nippon, precursor to the equally renowned Noritake.
Design and age
: Moriumua Nippon is justifiably famous for its high quality and this bowl is no exception. It features a striking design of raised gold moriage against a background of thin, translucent pure white porcelain.
The pattern is Nippon and Noritake's famous "Christmas Ornament" or "Christmas Ball" design, which over the years has been identified by various pattern numbers, including 175, 16034, and 46031. It was produced between 1906 and 1992. This bowl is from the earlier part of that range.
Condition
: It's in overall excellent condition with no chips, nicks, cracks, scratches, repairs, crazing or discoloration. There is wear to the edge and to the gold around the rim, and several of the tiny dots, inconsistencies and indentations that were created in the manufacturing process and are typical of Japanese porcelain of this era.
Size
: The bowl is 7 1/2 inches wide and 1 13/4 inches tall; it weighs 10.5 ounces.
